[El Mirage, AZ August 2, 2017] - Dignitaries from around the Valley joined El Mirage officials, residents, and other guests this afternoon to celebrate the grand opening of the new DEK Hockey Rink at the Northwest Valley Family YMCA.
City staff in its ongoing efforts to bring improvements to our community in cost effective ways, sought a unique partnership with the Arizona Coyotes Hockey Club and KuKaZi to bring an outdoor DEK hockey rink to the Northwest Valley Family YMCA. The Coyotes graciously donated the rink to the City and the Northwest Valley Family YMCA will program the rink to serve youth and adults. This rink is the first municipal DEK hockey rink donated by Coyotes in Arizona, and the second rink in the Valley, as a rink was opened at Luke Air Force Base this past spring. Other rinks are planned in cities across the Valley.
DEK hockey is a new initiative from the NHL intended to grow the game by introducing kids to the sport. All you need is a hockey stick, tennis shoes, a ball, and a place to play. DEK hockey can be played year-round and DEK facilities can be used for inline hockey as well as soccer, volleyball, and other sports. Todd Heinecke, Vice President of Operations Valley of the Sun YMCA, stated, “We are very excited with the opportunity to expand our programming options in this great community. The YMCA is thankful for the City’s partnership allowing it to contribute to the El Mirage community in very positive ways.”
Commenting on the new facility, Mayor Lana Mook said, “I would like to recognize City staff for continuing to do more with less and for their ongoing focus on youth and families. It is innovations like this that have allowed us to continue to improve our City.”
