Council Meetings - Types
CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS
City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month except during summer hiatus (second meeting in July and first meeting in August) and the second meeting in November and December. Meetings begin at 6:00 PM (unless otherwise noted) and are held in the City Council Chambers, 10000 N. El Mirage Road, El Mirage, Arizona (unless otherwise noted).
Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities. Alternative format materials, sign language interpretation, assisting listening devices or interpretation in languages other than English are available upon 72 hours advance notice through the Office of the City Clerk, 10000 N. El Mirage Road, El Mirage, Arizona (623)876-2943, TDD (623)933-3258, or FAX (623) 876-4603. To the extent possible, additional reasonable accommodations will be made available within the time constraints of the request.
TYPES OF COUNCIL MEETINGS
Regular Meetings - At Regular Council meetings, the Mayor and Council adopt Ordinances, which become the laws of the City of El Mirage, adopt Resolutions which express the policy of the City or direct administrative action, and award contracts. The public may address Council during CALL TO THE PUBLIC or during Public Hearings.
Work Session - is a meeting held for informal in-depth informational purposes, including presentations to Council. There is no formal action taken at a Work Session though staff may receive direction from the Mayor and Council. There is no public input at a Work Session.
Special Meetings – a Special Meeting is a meeting that is called outside the adopted meeting schedule. These meetings are typically called to address emergency situations or single agenda items that cannot wait until the next regularly scheduled meeting. There is no public input at a Special Meeting.
Executive Session - is a closed meeting called by Council to consider certain items including legal, real estate, and personnel matters pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.03. Formal authority to hold an Executive Session can be taken at either a Regular or Special Council meeting. No formal action can be taken in an Executive Session and discussions are confidential per State Law. Minutes are required but are sealed and not available to the public.
Public Hearing - is a meeting held to receive citizen input on a specific item and may be required by Federal and/or State agencies and can be conducted during a Regular or Special Council meeting.
